Understanding the old Code 14 and how it maps to the current South African licence system
Code 14 = Code EC. It's South Africa's highest driving licence — it covers articulated trucks, superlinks, and fuel tankers with no weight limit. The name changed from Code 14 to Code EC in 1998, but they are the same licence.
Code 14 was the designation for South Africa's highest driving licence under the old numbering system. It authorised the holder to drive articulated heavy vehicles with no weight restriction.
The National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996 — which took effect in 1998 — replaced the old numeric codes with a letter-based system aligned to international standards. Under this new system, Code 14 became Code EC.
Despite the name change over two decades ago, "Code 14" remains widely used in everyday conversation, job advertisements, and the trucking industry across South Africa. Whether someone says Code 14 or Code EC, they are referring to the same licence.
A Code 14 (Code EC) licence permits you to drive any articulated vehicle with no weight limit. This is the licence most sought after by professional long-haul truck drivers.
Code 14 (EC) also includes everything that Code C1 and Code B cover. This means you can drive medium trucks, light motor vehicles, bakkies, and cars — all on a single licence.
Yes. All old code licences were automatically converted when the new system came into effect in 1998. If you held a Code 14, your licence card now shows Code EC.
You did not need to retake any test or reapply. The conversion was handled administratively. When you renewed your licence card, the new code was printed automatically.
If your card still shows the old code number, it is still valid — but you should update it the next time you renew to avoid confusion at roadblocks or with employers.
Up to 3,500 kg — cars, bakkies, SUVs, and light delivery vehicles
